When doubt comes knocking at your door, do you let it in? Do you greet it with a smile and let it take over your mental space?

There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging it, even greeting it, but it’s important that you don’t believe it, to not allow yourself to see it as truth. When you allow doubt into your personal room, which is your life, how can you defend yourself from being taken over by its mysteriously cunning ways? If the entire space is filled with those negative thoughts that you believe, then how can you be the healthier and loving, confident person you were meant to be? Confidence is something I struggled with all my life.

I listened too long to those negative thoughts, but one magical day I found my song!

Finding My Way Through Music

I’ve been told that you can stand in a power stance like Amy Cuddy teaches, or meditate to ground you, or my favorite suggestion, “just do some squats and to get your blood flowing”. It was all helpful but didn’t give me the confidence and excitement like my song did. It fed my mind and heart when I sang and danced along to …“This Is Me” from the film The Greatest Showman. Something just clicked within me and allowed me to express my power in individuality. So now when I am feeling low or know I need a little confidence boost to my esteem, I play my three-song playlist. I like to start by exercising my voice, so when I speak, my voice is strong. I start with Sarah McLachlan’s “Blackbird” because this artist and song is in a range I can comfortably master at all volumes. I feel like a pro singing it, building my confidence, then I move into my power song…. “This is Me” from the film The Greatest Showman.

By the way, I stand while singing and dancing around the room. I can’t help but feel pumped up and ready to take on the world after singing this at the top of my lungs on repeat three or four times. I wrap up with another listen of “Blackbird” and I am ready to stand in my power confidently.

Stepping in Rhythm

What you feed your soul matters. Music can quickly change our moods and give us excitement. For some it’s angry, hard, metal music, others it might be classical.

The messages you welcome into your mind mean something. And the more you hear them, the more confidence you attain to ward off the overreaching control your visiting doubt tries to use. Confidence comes with consistently taking action towards you – you got this!

It’s time to step to the beat of your own drum, feeling the rhythm, vibration, and call to action from within. Take the power boost you have now absorbed and reverbalized through song to make a change, a step towards your dream, and jaunt forward to the person you are proud of becoming.

Want to get energized with me? Here are the lyrics to my favorite motivational song:

I am not a stranger to the dark

Hide away, they say

‘Cause we don’t want your broken parts

I’ve learned to be ashamed of all my scars

Run away, they say

No one’ll love you as you are

But I won’t let them break me down to dust

I know that there’s a place for us

For we are glorious

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down

I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown ’em out

I am brave, I am bruised

I am who I’m meant to be, this is me

Look out ’cause here I come

And I’m marching on to the beat I drum

I’m not scared to be seen

I make no apologies, this is me

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

Another round of bullets hits my skin

Well, fire away ’cause today, I won’t let the shame sink in

We are bursting through the barricades and

Reaching for the sun (we are warriors)

Yeah, that’s what we’ve become (yeah, that’s what we’ve become)

I won’t let them break me down to dust

I know that there’s a place for us

For we are glorious

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down

I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown ’em out

I am brave, I am bruised

I am who I’m meant to be, this is me

Look out ’cause here I come

And I’m marching on to the beat I drum

I’m not scared to be seen

I make no apologies, this is me

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

This is me

And I know that I deserve your love

(Oh-oh-oh-oh) There’s nothing I’m not worthy of

(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh)

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down

I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown ’em out

This is brave, this is bruised

This is who I’m meant to be, this is me

Look out ’cause here I come (look out ’cause here I come)

And I’m marching on to the beat I drum (marching on, marching, marching on)

I’m not scared to be seen

I make no apologies, this is me

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down

I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown ’em out

I’m gonna send a flood

Gonna drown ’em out

Oh

This is me
